Fire breaks out at Blake's restaurant in Midtown

Fire officials said no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, which only caused "moderate damage," according to Holmes.

ATLANTA — Fire officials are investigating after a fire broke out at a popular gay bar in the heart of Midtown Atlanta Saturday morning.

According to Atlanta Fire Rescue spokesman Anaré Holmes, fire fighters got multiple calls between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Saturday about heavy smoke coming from the inside of Blake's on the Park bar. The establishment sits at the corner of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue near the city's rainbow crosswalk.

When fire fighters got there, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the backside corner of the building, adjacent to the bar and next to the bathroom.

Fire officials said no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, which only caused "moderate damage," according to Holmes. Photos and video from inside the club show much of the interior mostly free from damage.

Holmes added the fire would not be a reason to take the night spot down and he expects the club will be "back and operating as soon as possible."

Blake's said on social media on May 28 that it would remain closed for the week. Fire officials also said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The establishment has been an Atlanta staple since 1988, and is known for it's LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere.
