Six water rescues at Covington RV Park, officials say

Some residents don't even know if they have homes to go back to.

COVINGTON, Ga. — Tuesday's storm left one Covington RV Park in shambles.

The Newton County Emergency Management Agency said six people had to be rescued at the Riverside Mobile Home and RV Park Wednesday morning due to flooding from the Yellow River running next to it.

The residents said that the storm came in like a waterfall. Many had to grab the necessities and go.

Newton County officials said they warned residents to evacuate, but for those who didn't, it was too late. One couple started helping their neighbors leave.

"We started knocking on doors of neighbors because there was a lot of people that still hadn't left," they said.

Don Rogers said he woke up to a yard underwater. He said he had to be rescued by boat.

"We got up this morning. And it was water all around us," Rogers said. "It came up quicker than we thought it was.  And so, the emergency people came and evacuated me."

Holly Franklin's camper wasn't damaged. However, she watched crews work to rescue her neighbors.

"I saw people trying to get their stuff out. Cars were being pulled out. I even seen a couple of boats," Franklin continued. "People were underwater trying to get their stuff unplugged."

RVs were underwater. And you could see people's belongings like pots, tables, and jugs floating alongside the Yellow River.

Rogers said he had nowhere to go.

"Not yet," Rogers said. "I'll figure out something."

He did receive a hot meal. Rogers said he works in landscaping. His equipment is ruined. He fought back tears, thinking about all he's lost.

"Sad. Yeah, sad," Rogers said.

Thankfully, everyone made it out. However, neighbors won't know the condition of their homes until the water recedes. A representative from the Red Cross said they're assisting at least three people. Emergency Management is assessing the damage.

All residents can do now is watch and wait.

"It's horrendous," one resident said. "Especially all the campers that... they've just lost everything. It's bad."
