Fulton County Schools investigate security incident where student may have hacked some IT systems

In the letter, school officials said they learned of an incident "believed to involve unauthorized access to certain Information Technology systems."

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Schools notified parents Wednesday of a security incident where a student may have hacked some IT systems.

In the letter, school officials said they had learned of an incident "believed to involve unauthorized access to certain Information Technology systems by one or more FCS Innovation Academy students."

School officials said the incident is under investigation and they are monitoring its IT security. They also took measures to contain the situation.

"FCS will be working with external partners and law enforcement to conduct a comprehensive network review to determine the full scope of the impact including what data, if any, was accessed," the letter added.

The district told 11Alive that this incident is not related to the cybersecurity situation that happened recently with the Fulton County government. Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts announced Monday they were suffering widespread outages stemming from a cybersecurity incident. Several services were impacted. The investigation into that situation is also underway.
