Fayetteville officer shoots armed man allegedly involved in domestic dispute, authorities say

The man was taken to a hospital. Authorities did not share the extent of his injuries.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — A man is in the hospital after a Fayetteville police officer shot him while responding to a domestic dispute, the department said. The Fayetteville Police Department asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to step in.

FPD was dispatched to Paces Court around 4 p.m. According to the department, a driver had pulled over in the area and called to report a domestic dispute between a man and a woman that seemed to be unfolding in the backseat of a vehicle. Four people were in the car, according to officers, and they all knew each other. The caller said the man had run away from the area wearing a gray jumpsuit and carrying a gun.

Officers found the man by Paces Drive and Beauregard Boulevard, which is near a shopping center and veterinary office. During the police's interaction with the man, an officer fired their gun and shot him, according to FPD.

The man was taken to an Atlanta area hospital for treatment. Police said "his condition remains unknown at this time." The man was armed during his interaction with police but did not fire his gun, authorities said.

Authorities are still investigating and said the area will be shut down as they collect evidence. There is no threat to the public, according to police.

The GBI has been asked to take over the investigation as an independent third party, as is typical protocol among law enforcement in the state.
