A series of tweets from a 16-year-old girl went unnoticed...until it was too late.

Before the body of Hannah Truelove was found stabbed to death in the woods between her Gainesville apartment and Lake Lanier, she sent out several tweets about someone she thought was stalking her.

"For me as an investigator, stabbing is not something that is not impersonal," Joseph Scott Morgan said. "It generally indicates there is a closeness to the victim and perpetrator."

So, did Hannah know the person who led her into the woods and took her life?

"Authorities are operating on the theory that she might have known her attacker and willingly walked down to the area where the body was found," Defense Investigator Charles Mittelstadt said.

But what about her tweets? What do they tell investigators about what was happening in her life...and what may have led to her death?

"You can't ignore the fact that she tweeted something related to a stalker," Mittelstadt said. "She expresses being scared and she expresses wanting to move out of these apartments."

One of the major challenges investigators have faced is the crime scene itself, where a lot of potential evidence was lost in the rain.

"It really washed away most, if not all, of the trace evidence that you would typically expect to find...including her own blood," Mittelstadt said.

But the investigators have one big clue they hope will lead to an answer: a distinctive vehicle seen in the apartment complex. It's a late 1990s to 2000 silver, four door Chevy or Dodge with front end damage and a lighter colored driver side door.

"Maybe someone saw, not her, but the car circling around. If they can connect those two, it will be very significant to the case," Morgan said.

But even with that lead, it's been three years and the case has gone cold. Yet, Ramona Truelove, Hannah's mother, refuses to give up.

"We can't go back and save Hannah, but we can honor her memory and bring closure to her tragic death," she told 11Alive back in 2012.
