Georgia native 1st person of color to play lead role in Broadway musical 'Dear Evan Hansen'

Banks is an understudy for the tree characters in the Tony award wining show, including the lead, Evan Hansen.

A Georgia native just became the first person of color to play the lead role in the Broadway musical 'Dear Evan Hansen.'

Roman Banks graduated from Parkview High School in Gwinnett County with a dream to perform on Broadway.

He's now making history as he get's the chance to do so in musical.

Banks is an understudy for three characters in the Tony award wining show, including the lead, Evan Hansen.

He took to the stage last week, making him the first person of color to perform as Evan Hansen.

Banks has been in theatre since his high school days.

11Alive did a story last year on Banks when he gave a musical speech at his graduation ceremony. 

Now that he is on Broadway, he sent a special shout-out to one of his former teaches.

"I'd like to give a shout-out to my drama teacher from high school, Sharon Morrow," he said. "Thank you so much for always supporting and believing in me."
