ATLANTA — A Georgia State Patrol trooper was killed Sunday afternoon during a crash in the line of duty, according to state officials.
On Monday morning, the Georgia Department of Public Safety identified the trooper as Jimmy Cenescar.
Trooper Cenescar has been with GSP since Jan. 2023 and was a graduate of the 114th Trooper School, DSP said.
"The Department of Public Safety sends its sincerest condolences and prayers to Trooper Jimmy Cenescar's family and co-workers. Please keep Trooper Cenescar’s family in your prayers as they cope with the loss of their loved one," a statement said.
Georgia DPS first posted a message on social media Sunday night saying that a state trooper had died in a "patrol vehicle crash."
In Monday's update, DSP said he was attempting to stop a motorcycle on I-85 near Old Peachtree Road in Atlanta when his cruiser "left the roadway and struck an embankment."
"Emergency personnel responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures. Trooper Cenescar was rushed to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, where he passed away," DSP said.
Gov. Brian Kemp also sent his condolences, saying that he and his family are "truly heartbroken by the tragic passing of one of Georgia’s finest."
After the release of Cenescar's identity, Kemp followed with an additional statement saying: "All of Georgia is in mourning today for Trooper Jimmy Cenescar. As a young public safety officer, he was at the beginning of a life with years of experiences and opportunities that lay ahead and a career dedicated to protecting others. That service and commitment to duty inspires us all and makes this sudden loss all the more tragic. Our heartfelt prayers are with Trooper Cenescar's family, his fiancée, his colleagues, and friends today. They will remain in our thoughts throughout this difficult time, and we ask all Georgians to join us in reflecting on the heavy sacrifices brave men and women like Trooper Cenescar make each day for the safety of our communities."
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said he was "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of this brave trooper."
Georgia State Patrol and Georgia Department of Public Safety said details will be released a little later.
