How to make a hurricane plan for your family

Thinkstock

The federal government created a website to help families prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters. Ready.gov provides ideas and plans for what to include in a emergency kit and how to create a plan of action in case family members are separated during a storm.

What to include in a disaster supply kit:

  • Flashlight or lantern with batteries
  • Cash
  • First aid supplies
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Copies of your important documents
  • Chargers
  • Snacks with a long shelf life that provide energy
  • Water
  • More items to include: https://www.ready.gov/kit

What to include in a family communication plan:

Answering basic questions about meeting locations and protocols ahead of a hurricane can be useful if families are separated when a storm hits.

  • How will families members get emergency alerts or warnings?
  • What is a safe meeting place in an emergency?
  • How will family members get to that meeting place?
  • How will family members get in touch with one another if cell phones, internet or landline phones won't work?
  • How will family members let each other know they're safe?

When to prepare for a hurricane:

The best time to prepare for a hurricane is long before one arrives. Preparation before hand gives families enough time to work through scenarios and practice for emergencies.
