The federal government created a website to help families prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters. Ready.gov provides ideas and plans for what to include in a emergency kit and how to create a plan of action in case family members are separated during a storm.
What to include in a disaster supply kit:
- Flashlight or lantern with batteries
- Cash
- First aid supplies
- Whistle to signal for help
- Copies of your important documents
- Chargers
- Snacks with a long shelf life that provide energy
- Water

What to include in a family communication plan:
Answering basic questions about meeting locations and protocols ahead of a hurricane can be useful if families are separated when a storm hits.
- How will families members get emergency alerts or warnings?
- What is a safe meeting place in an emergency?
- How will family members get to that meeting place?
- How will family members get in touch with one another if cell phones, internet or landline phones won't work?
- How will family members let each other know they're safe?
