'Don't give up' | Cherokee County woman holds sign next to busy road, hands out resumes in search of full-time job

Nicole Thomas said she saw a man land his dream job that way, and decided to do the same thing. She's received several calls since her first time holding up the sign

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Looking for a job is not always easy. Locking one down, can be even harder. However, Nicole Thomas got creative in order to find her next gig.

If you've driven near exit 8 on Highway 575 in Cherokee County, there's a chance you may have seen her standing on the side of the road, holding a large sign that reads, "seeking full time job. Take my resume."

The other side of her poster reads, "What’s scarier than Halloween? Being unemployed/ almost homeless. Take my resume."

"It’s a hard job market. I’ve been close where I almost got a job. I'll get to the top three candidate then not get it. It's understandable," she said. "There’s so many great candidates out there. It’s just really hard to find a job, but I’m going to keep trying until something opens. Something has to open," she said.

She stood on the side of the Towne Lake Parkway Wednesday afternoon, handing out her resume to drivers willing to take it for the second time this week. Some drivers would honk, others would scream, "You got this!" Others would grab her resume, and many would offer her money.

"I don't feel right taking money when I know people need it more and I'm not homeless yet," she said. "I'm just trying to be proactive. I have some money but I am worried that if I don't find something that something bad could happen."

The 26-year-old has determination, grit, and a mass communications degree. Thomas has two businesses of her own: one doing social media management and another helping people write resumes and cover letters.

But she’s looking for a full-time job to help pay the bills, and keep the resume business on the side. She said that after her first time doing this, she received several calls.

“I don’t feel like I’m worried about being homeless anymore," she said. "So many people have reached out to me, it’s really nice.”

She got this idea after looking up “entrepreneur becomes homeless” online, and found a man who landed his dream job by holding up a sign and handing out resumes.

So far, she has been on at least two interviews.

"So many people in the community want you to succeed and it feels so good. Don’t give up, keep knocking down doors until a door opens."
