- DeKalb County food distribution -- DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond's last food distribution is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23. The events started in 2020. DeKalb County Fire Rescue hosts an open house on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It will be at Fire Station 7 at 1712 Columbia Drive in Decatur.
Organizers said that there will be a station tour, hand-only CPR demonstration, meeting with firefighters, and more.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is opening applications for its MomForce session program.
The hospital is looking for "talented and motivated" parents who have taken time off to raise their families to return to the workforce.
According to organizers, participants will receive training on the latest technology and programs during the session. They will then oversee other projects while working part-time for 20 hours a week in non-clinical areas.
Children's added that since the program's launch in 2013, 142 MomForce associates have completed the program and over half of them found permanent positions at the hospital.
The session will run from Oct. 7 to Dec. 18. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 12.
Here are the qualifications:
- A minimum of three consecutive years away from the workforce
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field of study
- Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
- A proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook)
- A minimum of five years related professional work experience
- The ability to work onsite 20 hours per week for 12 weeks

Invest Atlanta is launching a new tax relief program to serve senior residents.
According to a release, Invest Atlanta announced the opening of the City of Atlanta's new Anti-Displacement Tax Relief Fund program. This is an affordable housing initiative that will provide tax relief to eligible homeowners who are age 60 or older with a greater risk of displacement due to rising property taxes.
The program will be piloted at this time in select neighborhoods to support some of the city's most vulnerable homeowners where 200 qualified applicants will be randomly selected for participation, Invest Atlanta said.

Today is the World's Largest Swim Lesson Day.
This annual event takes place at aquatic facilities, including large waterparks, public pools, and swim schools across the country, to raise awareness about the crucial need to teach children how to swim.
Swimming is a life-saving skill for children and an essential measure to prevent drowning, which is the leading cause of death for U.S. children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause for ages 5 to 14. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, formal swimming lessons for children between the ages of 1 to 4 can reduce the risk of drowning by 88%.

Salvation Army Box Fan Distribution
Starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, the metro Atlanta Salvation Army plans to pass out 1,000 free box electric fans to those in need. The funding for the distribution came from the donor-advised fund through the Atlanta Jewish Foundation at the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. The anonymous donor has given The Salvation Army this generous gift for more than 30 years, the Salvation Army said.

Summer Youth Employment Program Application Closing Soon
It's the last day for Atlanta residents ages 14 to 24 to register for Atlanta's Summer Youth Employment Program. According to the city's flyer, 14 to 15 will need a work permit, show their social security card along with a valid proof of residency and a state or school-issued photo ID. Apply here by 5 p.m. on May 29.

DeKalb County has created a virtual career academy that gives youth 700 different internships to learn and earn money. Here are some quick facts about the program:
How much can youth earn? $10 an hour to work 20 hours a week.
Who's eligible? DeKalb County residents between the ages of 14 and 24 who are available for all 5 weeks of the program.
How long is the program? From June 3 to July 5, 2024.
What is the application deadline? April 23 at 11:59 p.m.
