HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -- A famous local artist has died after being seriously injured in a motorcycle accident Friday night.

Officials said Andy Davis was injured in the accident in Henry County. Trooper Clayton Jones, who worked the scene, said Davis was struck from behind by a pickup truck while riding his motorcycle on Jodeco Road overpass.

Davis was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was taken off of life support Saturday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Davis' widow Gerri said her husband will donate his organs, tissue and bone. She described his decision to donate as his "final sculpture ... sculpting the lives and bodies" of those in need.

Monday morning, Gerri Davis posted a message about Andy to her Facebook page:

Last night, Andy Davis passed on to his next great adventure. He was so brave— he waited on us to tell him it was OK to go. We surrounded him with love, and let him know that we will carry on his legacy; He is always with us now. Andy was determined to help others, in fact, he went out of his way to help anyone from a little bird on the street with a broken wing, to a single mom who was homeless and hungry, giving them food for her and her baby. He has always cared for the well being of those less fortunate. Now, Andy gets to do that still, because his request to donate his organs to give the gift of life to others has been granted. His final sculpture is one we would never have imagined—That will be living, breathing, and seeing in someone's body. We have lost a giant today, but his Spirit, his Legacy, and his Big Blue Eyes will live on in our hearts and minds for years to come.

The Davis Family

Davis was a well-known local artist who recently turned an old vacant factory into a community art center in McDonough. He was tapped to do major work – most recently the sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. for the state house grounds.

11Alive profiled Davis just two weeks ago after he was tapped by Gov. Nathan Deal to create a statue of the famed civil rights legend at the Capitol grounds.

The driver of the pickup truck, 20-year-old Corey Sease, was taken into custody and charged with DUI, following too closely and marijuana possession, all misdemeanors. He was later released from jail on $2,951 bond.

The Georgia State Patrol said Monday that Sease would additionally be charged with felony first-degree vehicular homicide.
