Police investigating video circulating online possibly tied to McEachern High School parking lot shooting

While 11Alive independently obtained the video from a viewer, police were not able to say whether the video shows the exact moments leading to the shooting.

POWDER SPRINGS, Georgia — A video on social media is part of a police investigation possibly tied to the McEachern High School parking lot shooting where two people were hurt on Thursday.

The two injured were not students, police said, and were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. Police said they were both expected to survive.

In the short video taken from the inside of a car, a group of people dressed in hoodies can be seen gathered in a parking lot. It appears an individual then pulls out a possible firearm out and allegedly fires the weapon.

Gunshots are heard about six to seven seconds into the video as multiple people run away quickly.

While 11Alive independently obtained the video from a viewer, police were not able to say whether the video shows the exact moments leading to the shooting. 11Alive's Bobeth Yates asked Cobb County Police officers if the video showed the moments leading up to the shooting at their news conference. Police told reporters while they are aware of the video circulating online, they cannot confirm if that is the shooting and are investigating the material.

"I've seen two videos of this, I assume that it is this shooting. I cannot confirm that right this second but those details will be discovered as our investigation continues, they're already investigating right now on multiple fronts," Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said at the press conference.

The incident sparked a large police presence surrounding the school, and the school was placed on a brief Code Red lockdown until law enforcement authorities gave the all-clear.

The 11Alive SkyTracker captured evidence markers placed at the scene, where bullet shells were left scattered through the parking lot.

Just before 4 p.m., police said the school was secure and students were safe.

"This was never an active shooter. This was not that type of instance," VanHoozer said at the news conference. "I will say this -- when we get these calls, we don't know if it's an active shooter or not, and so our officers treat it as if it is an active shooter. We train for this... every single year in Cobb County, and we know how to handle these."

Police said around 4 p.m., the crime scene at the parking lot area was still active. Police directed parents of students at McEachern High School to pick their children up at 2595 New Macland Road (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

Cobb County Police detectives are trying to identify and apprehend those involved in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
