Suspect on the run following high-speed chase through southwest Atlanta that hurt three others: GSP

Troopers said the car didn't stop and exited onto Windsor Street to re-enter I-20.

GEORGIA, — A person is on the run from troopers after a high-speed chase through southwest Atlanta on Thursday morning that hurt three others, according to Georgia State Patrol.

It all started around 3 a.m. when troopers tried to stop a white Hyundai Sonata on Interstate 20 in the westbound lanes near the Interstate 75/85 connector. Troopers said the car didn't stop and exited onto Windsor Street to re-enter I-20.

That's when troopers said the car sped up. Authorities said they would have performed a PIT maneuver but "backed off due to traffic and a curve in the roadway."

The car then exited onto MLK Jr. Drive and traveled westbound, speeding around a curve. Troopers said the driver traveled off the right side of the road, and the car came to a stop.

Troopers said they began giving loud verbal commands to the driver, who "exited while reaching for something in his waistband." That's when authorities said the driver ran into the woods, where troopers deployed their Taser twice.

"The first attempt struck the driver with one probe, but he ripped out the probe, deployed a second time, and one probe struck again, causing the Taser to be ineffective," GSP said in part.

The suspect then got into a "short scuffle" with a trooper, hopped a fence and escaped on foot. GSP said after searching the area, the driver was not found.

There were three others in the car; GSP said two were seriously hurt, and the other had minor injuries. Troopers said the car was reported stolen in Atlanta and added that a stolen gun was found.

MLK Jr. Drive was shut down while authorities investigated the area.
