East Point leaders discuss growing litter issue

During the workshop hosted by Ward D Councilmember Stephanie Gordon, law enforcement officers presented solutions.

EAST POINT, Ga. — Litter is an issue that has been growing in East Point for some time, according to City Council member for Ward D Stephanie Gordon.

Gordon says she decided to host a litter enforcement workshop Monday to work on solutions

“Culturally, I think many people think littering is ok, and of course it’s not,” said Gordon.

While it was mostly law enforcement officers in attendance at the Four Point Sheraton, the event was open to the community.

“I came here to find out who to call when I notice somebody littering, and what I can do to help,” said East Point resident Joe Anderson.

During the workshop, officers explained many don’t seem to realize littering is a crime that can lead to fines, or eventually even jail time.

“We’re hoping this will encourage people in the community. The effort here will be picked up, to help enforce codes and keep our streets and community clean,” said East Point police representative Renita Shelton.

Gordon says the workshop is only the beginning of an effort to bring awareness and hopefully reduce litter in the city.

“We plan to talk to the youth about in schools and have more events. Hopefully, this will lead to a generation who grow up understanding how littering negatively impacts our community,” said Gordon.
