NEWNAN, Ga. — Students were forced to stay in a high school gym on Friday following reports of shots fired after a basketball game.
The call came in near Newnan High School in the area of Sunny Street and Waterworks Road, Deputy Chief Mark Cooper confirmed to 11Alive.
As per protocol, Cooper said police told students to stay in the gym for their safety since they weren't able to find the person responsible. Officers later worked to escort students to buses and allowed people to pick up kids at the front door of the gym.
But even after students were cleared from the area, officers remained as the investigation continued. Fortunately, first responders reported no injuries.
Officials have found clues near the scene of the crime but are still looking for the person responsible for the gunfire. Anyone with information about a suspect should contact the Newnan Police Department's Sergeant Jim Beneke at 770-254-2355.
