Storms cause fallen trees, power outages in metro Atlanta

There were dozens of reports of downed trees and power lines early Thursday morning, leaving thousands without power.

ATLANTA — Storms swept through metro Atlanta and north Georgia late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, bringing heavy winds and rain that toppled trees and power lines.

Damage has been reported in multiple counties, and outages have impacted thousands of Georgia Power customers. 

Storm damage also caused some school closures in the area. Haralson County School District canceled class Thursday due to ongoing power outages.

Reported damaged

  • More than 60,000 customers were without power overnight, continuing into Thursday morning. As of 7 a.m., most power outages in the region have been restored. 
  • Polk County - According to Polk County EMA, wind gusts caused a tree to fall on a vehicle near the 2600 block of Yorkville Highway in Rockmart, injuring one person. 
  • Kennesaw - Summers Street is closed from Cobb Pkwy to Keene St for a downed power line, according to the Kennesaw Police Department.  The repair is estimated to be completed in 6-8 hours.
  • Sandy Springs - Mount Vernon Parkway between Mount Vernon Highway and Idlewood Drive is blocked due to trees and power lines on the roadway.
