BUFORD, Ga. -- A wife is being charged with murder a year after her husband's death was originally reported as a suicide.

Liubov Volkova, 35, is behind bars in Gwinnett County facing murder charges.

On November 1, 2015, police responded to the couple's home just after 1:30 a.m. Volkova called 911 and said her husband just shot himself in the cheek. She met officers outside their home and told police her husband was on the stairs.

They said that was where 38-year-old Jordan Whitson was found dead. According to the police report, "he was lying on the landing of the stairs with his head on the stairs. I could see a gunshot wound on the right side of his face."

At the time, Volkova told officers she secured the gun before police arrived. They found her infant son in the nursery on the second floor. They reunited the baby with his mother and they found no one else in the home.

Last week, the lead detective in the case gathered enough evidence to push for a murder indictment. Volkova was arrested and charged on Friday, June 24.

"Specific details learned during this investigation will not be released at this time, however the detective does not believe the gunshot was self-inflicted," a spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Police Department told 11Alive News in a statement.
