Person shot, killed at apartment complex near busy Cobb County intersection identified

Police said the man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A person was shot and killed Wednesday at an apartment complex near a busy intersection in Cobb County, police said.

Marietta Police Public Information Officer Chuck McPhilamy confirmed the death. Police later identified the victim as 40-year-old Kenneth Cunningham II.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. It happened at the Harlow Apartments in the area of the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Windy Hill Road, just outside Smyrna city limits. Police said Cunningham lived at the complex.

Police said investigators are confident this was not a random act of violence.

"We don't believe the general public to be at harm or at risk at this point, but we would ask that you be alert if you're in the area," McPhilamy said in a press conference.

Police said Wednesday evening that the suspect was seen leaving the area immediately after the shooting happened. Several agencies responded as they searched for the man.

"Responding officers and deputies utilized K-9s as well as various technology to gather initial evidence and work to identify a suspect," authorities said in a statement.

Police said they were still actively pursuing tips and evidence and are not releasing any additional information about the suspect.

Earlier in the day, large police scenes were observed both at the Georgia Memorial Park cemetery in the area and the apartment complex at the Cobb Parkway/Windy Hill Road intersection.

Anyone who has information is urged to contact 911 or CrimeStoppers. Police are also asking anyone who was near the apartment complex or the Cobb Parkway/Windy Hill Road intersection around 10:30 a.m. who may have seen or heard something to contact 911.
