President Jimmy Carter misses teaching Sunday school due to recent surgery

Carter is still recovering from his fall and hip replacement surgery.

PLAINS, Ga. — President Jimmy Carter took a break from teaching his regular Sunday school class as he continues to recover from a hip replacement surgery spurred forward by a fall earlier in the month.

Carter, who underwent surgery due to a fall on May 13 had initially planned to teach the class but, according to a spokesperson for The Carter Center, he "underestimated the amount of time he would need to recover."

Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia has become a common stop for many who want to meet Carter and listen as he teaches Sunday school class.

"He and his wife, Rosalynn, appreciate everyone's support and prayers and apologize for any inconvenience to those who traveled to hear his lesson," the statement said.

However, for those who wish to visit, the church is still welcoming all who come as Carter's niece Kim Fuller will teach.

"No one will be disappointed," Carter said in the statement.

The fall happened when the 94-year-old was leaving his home in Plains, Georgia to go turkey hunting Monday morning. The Carter Center said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week and he hasn't reached his limit.

Rosalyn Carter was also admitted to the hospital at the time after she "felt faint." She was later released.
