Sen. Ossoff delivering money to help expand Atlanta Habitat for Humanity affordable housing project

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff said federal money is being given to Atlanta Habitat for Humanity to support its ongoing work in the Browns Mill Village development.

ATLANTA — More resources are being poured into affordable housing in Atlanta.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff announced Wednesday that he is delivering federal resources to Atlanta Habitat for Humanity to support its ongoing work in the Browns Mill Village development.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity's website describes Browns Mill Village as a mixed-income community south of downtown Atlanta in Orchard Knob. The website said it offers first-time home buyers an interest-free 30-year mortgage from $750 a month as well. The community's goal is to have a mix of homes and townhomes in the area.

Ossoff said he worked across party lines to be able to deliver $2,000,000 for the project through this year's bipartisan government funding package. The money will help build an additional 20 homes for the development, Ossoff said. He stated that the reason for this is that Georgian families urgently need more affordable housing.

President and CEO of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Dr. Alan Ferguson said the organization is grateful for the money as it starts the second phase of Brown Mill Village in southeast Atlanta.

"By directing funds towards building homes, Sen. Ossoff has helped address the housing shortage, support economic growth, and enhance the overall well-being of the Orchard Knob community," Ferguson said. "The impact of this Congressional Directed Spending will create positive outcomes for our families that will transform their lives for generations to come."

In general, housing has been a key focus in the City of Atlanta.

According to previous reporting by 11Alive, Atlanta City Council President Doug Shipman said he plans to double down on affordable housing initiatives in 2024. He previously stated that the new year brings new opportunities to break ground on housing, convert existing homes into affordable ones and allow longtime residents to stay in the city.  U.S. Senators Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock also previously announced new resources to upgrade housing in Atlanta back in February.
