A major road project that is more than a decade in the making is ready to get underway in Sandy Springs

Prepare for disruptions to come with the project.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Major changes are coming to a busy Sandy Springs intersection after years of planning and debate.

The spot where Roswell Road, Mt. Vernon Highway, and Johnson Ferry Road connect has long been a triangle of congestion and confusion.

“It’s a triangle so when you’re going to make a left it gets a little confusing,” said commuter Cynthia Grossman. “I see a lot of people get confused.”

There’s also safety.

“The main driver in this project is the number of accidents we’ve seen at Roswell Road at these two intersections,” said project manager Christine Schultz.

Discussions about overhauling the interchange began in 2007. Now that Sandy Springs has the design they like and the funding they need, work will get underway. Construction crews are ready to begin work on a $15 million project that will eliminate the triangle, separating Mt. Vernon Highway and Johnson Ferry in the area where they now converge. Crews will add lanes to turn one way traffic on the two streets into two way traffic.

Schultz says for the next two years drivers should expect disruptions. Lanes will close and traffic will shift on occasion.

“If you can avoid the area we highly recommend that,” said Schultz. “We understand people live and work in the area. Bear with us.”

Plans call for a connector road that will link Mt. Vernon Highway with Johnson Ferry. There will also be new sidewalks and a multi-use path.
