SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. – A piece of metro Atlanta history is no more. Glenridge Hall in Sandy Springs was demolished on Thursday.

The Glenridge Hall Family Office is selling the property to developer Ashton Woods despite a public outcry. Thousands of people had signed an online petition to save the historic house.

Ashton Woods, an Atlanta-based homebuilder, plans to put in a mixed-use development on the north side of Abernathy Road and sell land on the south side to Mercedes Benz for a new headquarters.

Glenridge Hall was on the National Registry of Historic Places and had been featured in the CW TV series "The Vampire Diaries."

Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said the city looked into whether the city could pay to restore Glenridge Hall but backed off because of the multi-million dollar price tag.

On Thursday, crews reduced the mansion to a pile a rubble.
