Suspect injured in DeKalb County officer-involved dies at hospital

This is what we know.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The suspect who was sent to the hospital after being shot by an officer Tuesday night has died. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified him as 22-year-old Steven Louis Goins.

According to DeKalb County Police, the shooting happened after an armed robbery at a Family Dollar in the 4700 block of Covington Highway. Police say an officer who arrived to the call saw the suspect walking away from the store and followed him to Oak Valley Road.

Authorities said the suspect was armed and fired off a round at the officer. The officer returned fire and hit the suspect somewhere on his body. First responders took the suspect to the hospital in critical condition. On Wednesday morning, the GBI said Goins was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The officer was not hurt. Police say the two employees inside the store at the time of the armed robbery were also not hurt.

After the shooting, investigators recovered a bag of money and a firearm.

The GBI said it will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Meanwhile, the officer is on administrative leave.
