Suspect leads troopers on pursuit before crashing into car, killing driver in Atlanta: GSP

As the pursuit continued, troopers said the suspect drove through a red light at the intersection of Campbellton Road and Barge Road.

ATLANTA — A pursuit involving Georgia State Patrol led to a deadly crash that killed an innocent driver on Campbellton Road in Atlanta on Friday afternoon, troopers said.

It all started just before 3 p.m., when Atlanta Police requested GSP troopers to stop a Ram 1500 pickup truck. GSP said that APD told them its officers had been involved in a pursuit with the truck several days before.

As GSP arrived, officers with Atlanta Police initiated a traffic stop to pull the driver over. That's when troopers said the driver sped off and initiated a pursuit.

APD officers yielded the pursuit to the trooper, GSP said.

Troopers said the driver got on Interstate 285 and began driving recklessly before he got off the exit to Campbellton Road, going west. As the pursuit continued, troopers said the suspect drove through a red light at the intersection of Campbellton Road and Barge Road, where they struck the driver of a Dodge Challenger. The Challenger was knocked into a utility pole.

The driver of the Challenger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Georgia State Patrol.

GSP's specialized collision reconstruction team is investigating the crash, and troopers said that there are charges pending for the suspect in this crash.
