Metro Atlanta voters have questions about redrawn voting maps

ATLANTA — With the upcoming Georgia primary election just around the corner, some changes to the ballot are leading to questions for people looking to cast their ballot.

Early voting started on April 29 -- giving voters the opportunity to cast their ballots for several races but this year some of the voting districts have been redrawn.

Emory University political scientist Andra Gillespie says the maps are redrawn every 10 years, but there’s a foolproof way for voters to learn who’s running.

“Put in your address and pull up a sample ballot. That way, you know who you’re voting for, and also gives you time to research the candidates who may be running in your district," Gillespie said.

Gillespie said that this election season, voters might find that they are in new districts.

“Congressionally speaking, the 13th district is a new district. The sixth and the seventh districts have been redrawn, and the adjacent districts may have also been affected because people were moved from one district to another," Gillespie said.

The political scientist points out that some voters might be receiving campaign flyers in the mail claiming endorsements from nationally recognized political figures.

She advises doing some research before accepting those endorsements as legitimate.

“Unless you hear from his office that he endorsed these people or you actually physically see him endorsing people by, like, doing a radio ad for them or making a public appearance with them," Gillespie explained.

The Georgia general primary election is May 21.

Early voting is open from April 29 through May 17.
