Georgia congressman loses House speaker nomination vote

Representative Austin Scott lost to Ohio Republican Jim Jordan in a closed-door vote Friday afternoon.

ATLANTA — Georgia congressman Austin Scott lost his bid for House speaker on Friday in a closed-door vote Friday afternoon.

NBC News reports Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the far-right Judiciary Committee chairman backed by Donald Trump, bested Scott for the speakership nomination by a vote of 124-81.

Scott posted on X, formally known as Twitter, Friday morning that he was running for the position.

"We are in Washington to legislate, and I want to lead a House that functions in the best interest of the American people," Scott's post said in part.

Scott was first elected to Congress in 2011. He currently serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Armed Services Committee, and the House Agriculture Committee

He represents Georgia’s 8th district, which includes the cities of Perry, Valdosta and portions of Macon.

The move comes after Lousiana Republican Steve Scalise ended his bid to become House speaker late Thursday. Jordan is the second Republican nominated for the position this week.

The speakership became vacant after Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy from the job earlier this month.
