Georgia House rep leaves Democratic Party, citing school choice disagreement

Georgia Rep. Mesha Mainor of District 56 said her decision came after her fellow Democrats disagreed with her opinion on school choice.

ATLANTA — A lawmaker from the Georgia House of Representatives has decided to leave the Democratic Party, according to a post on her Twitter account Tuesday.

Georgia Rep. Mesha Mainor of District 56 said her decision came after her fellow Democrats disagreed with her opinion on school choice.

In an earlier post on her Twitter account, Mainor said in a video that she voted yes to school voice.

"Let's be real, parents do not want their child trapped in a failing school," Mainor said.

She will now serve as a Republican in the state of Georgia.

After her announcement, Mainor thanked former Georgia Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler for a message that said she was "attacked the moment she spoke out for law enforcement and educational freedom."

"Grateful for her conviction, and her willingness to serve our state - as Georgia's newest Republican," Loeffler said.
