LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The winner of this year's 150th Kentucky Derby will take home the grandest prize the most prestigious horse race in the world has ever seen.

The purse for this year's Kentucky Derby rose to $5 million in 2024, which now makes it the most-prized purse in the history of the race.

In 2023, when Mage won, his team won $1.86 million of the $3 million purse. That was 62% of the entire purse.

As CNBC reported in 2019, jockeys receive a 10% cut of the winning payout at the Kentucky Derby.

Here's how the $5 million purse breaks down this year, which will be split among the top five finishers at the derby.

How much money is on the line based on finishing position in Kentucky Derby
