California teen racer is breaking barriers on the track

Kylie Glick is a 13-year-old junior NASCAR driver who's blazing her own trail.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — While most 13-year-olds are probably playing video games or getting in trouble with their friends, one 13-year-old in Placer County doesn't have time for all that because she's too busy burning rubber.

"I started my journey when I was 10 and I'm the fourth generation of Glick racers," said Kylie Glick.

Racing is in her blood.

"My great-grandpa raced at All-American Speedway when it was actually dirt, so a very long time ago," said Glick.

She's also a trailblazer on the track.

"I'm the first female in my family to race cars and my long term goal is to go to NASCAR," said Glick.

She's well on her way to accomplishing her goal. In three short years, Glick has gone from quarter midget racing to the full-sized late model car she uses in junior NASCAR competitions. Although she's a relatively new racer, she's aware of the stereotypes that come with being a girl in a male-dominated field.

"People will say, 'She's just a girl, she's going to crash or she's just a girl, that's why she crashed,' and I don't think that's true," said Glick.

She's already proving the skeptics wrong while continuing to climb the ranks.

"Racing has taught me a lot," said Glick. "You have to be nice to everyone because you don't know their backstory, never give up, always believe in yourself, don't doubt yourself because you can accomplish so much in life."

In the meantime, it's safe to say she has no fears the moment she steps in the racecar.

"You've just got to believe, pray and hope for the best," said Glick. "That's part of racing and that's what you sign up for."

Glick races in Madera May 18 and she comes back home to Roseville to race on the All-American Speedway June 1.
