At least one dead in fiery wreck on I-285 near Bolton Road

The wreck blocked all of the northbound lanes for several hours.

At least one person was killed in a fatal wreck on Interstate 285 northbound near the Bolton Road exit on Atlanta's far west side early Sunday morning.

Atlanta Police Officer Jarius Daugherty said that when officers responded to reports of an injury wreck on I-285 near Bolton Road at about 4:30 a.m., they found three cars involved in the wreck and one man dead on the ground.

Investigators said the victim was putting gas into his car on the right shoulder of the freeway when he was struck by one car, which tossed him into one of the travel lanes. He was then struck by a second car headed northbound on I-285.

The driver of that car remained on the scene and is cooperating with police.

Two occupants of the at-fault vehicle were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries from the wreck. Charges are pending.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said the lanes of the interstate were completely blocked for northbound traffic through about 7 a.m.

The road has since been reopened. No other details were immediately available.
