Echoes of massive weekend fire as car burns on I-85 northbound

The GSP says Monday's wreck was caused by a stolen car. The driver ran away after the crash.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A car fire on I-85 northbound Monday morning left motorists with a harrowing echo of a massive fire on the same freeway this weekend, in almost the same spot.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, at about 6:20 a.m., a stolen 2019 Dodge Challenger was traveling northbound on I-85 about one mile south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Gwinnett County.

The Dodge was following a 2017 Toyota Camry being driven by 31-year-old Matthew Millwood of Canton, the GSP said -- and following far too closely.

The GSP said the Dodge struck the Toyota in the rear, forcing it to overturn and strike a third vehicle in an adjacent lane -- a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer being driven by 47-year-old Christopher Noble of Lawrenceville.

The Toyota continued its uncontrolled skid, according to the GSP, hitting the wall and catching fire as it came to rest. The driver of the Toyota was able to escape.

The Dodge lost control and ran into the wall head-on. Its driver got out and ran away on foot, the GSP said.

According to the GSP, the driver of the stolen Dodge is described as an African American male and has not been located as of this point.

11Alive Traffic Tracker Crash Clark said that after Monday morning's wreck, traffic was backed up to Spaghetti Junction.

Viewers sent in video as they drove past the fire.

A massive fire started on I-85 northbound in Gwinnett County on Saturday after a tanker truck crashed with two other cars.

That incident left two people dead, including the truck driver and snarled traffic on the interstate for more than 10 hours.
