A soaker of a system will bring heavy rain to Georgia this week

The low developing in the gulf will bring heavy rain.

A soaker of a system is developing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Even though it probably won't become a named tropical system, the low developing in the gulf will bring heavy rain much like a tropical system could and would.

Deep tropical moisture will be circulating around the upper level Gulf low for the next several days, giving us persistent rain, which will add to some 3 to 5 inches.

Year-to-date, we have over a 2-inch surplus largely because of the healthy rain we saw during April with over 6-and-a-half inches falling last month. Ever since then it has been mostly dry, so the rain this week could be beneficial for all of North Georgia. So, with all of this rain this week, we could have a year-to-date surplus of several inches by the beginning of next week.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring the upper low and is giving it only a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical system during the next five days. Tropical development is not expected due to the fact that the water is just not quite warm enough.

Whether it becomes a tropical system or not, the system will still have major impacts across the Florida peninsula and Georgia the next several days.
