Preliminary results from survey show EF-1 tornado damage in Ellijay

Storms swept through the area late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

ELLIJAY, Ga. — Preliminary results from a National Weather Service (NWS) survey in Ellijay on Friday show EF-1 tornado damage in the area.

Ellijay and the wider Gilmer County area were hit especially hard as storms swept through the area late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

An EF-1 tornado would mean max winds of 90-100 miles per hour impacted the area.

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado touched down near the intersection of Ellington Road and Old Highway 5 South, about two miles southwest of Ellijay.

11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene on Friday, showing buildings with walls and roofs blown away, completely wrecked trailers, and large fallen trees.

Multiple buildings sustained significant damage, including two metal storage units and the Georgia Forestry building. Strong winds caused minor roof damage and several snapped trees, especially in the areas near the CSX Railroad near Progress Road and Casey Drive intersection.

The NWS will continue to survey the area by air and could provide an update at a later time.
