First snow of the season arrives at east Tennessee lodge

The LeConte Lodge saw four inches of ground accumulation.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Believe it or not, a part of East Tennessee received snow on Monday, Oct. 16.

LeConte Lodge said a mix of rain, sleet and snow fell steadily from Sunday night into Monday morning.

The lodge had a total of four inches of snow, according to a Facebook post.

The snow event was the second earliest one on Mount LeConte since records began in the winter of 1987-88.  On average, the first snow usually happens around Nov. 7.

Four inches of snow is above average for October snow events.

At 6,593 feet, Mount LeConte is the third-highest peak in the Smokies.
