atlanta — The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Fulton, Gwinnett, DeKalb, Forsyth and Cobb Counties on Wednesday morning.
The warnings have now expired but lasted until 11:45 AM.
The threat included 60 mph wind gusts with impacts including damage to roofs, siding and trees. The heavy rain continues and the rain band is moving east towards Atlanta.
The NWS received multiple reports of trees down in Paulding County near the intersection of Mount Tabor Church Road and East Paulding Drive. An awning was damaged at an elementary school.
Near Dobins Air Force Base, 45 to 50 mph winds were recorded but they reported no damage.
The National Weather Service said a tornado is possible.
"This thunderstorm can produce a brief tornado and widespread significant wind damage. Although a tornado is not immediately likely, it is best to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. This storm may cause serious injury and significant property damage," the NWS said.
A wind advisory is also in effect for portions of north and central Georgia until 6PM Wednesday. Wind gusts up to 35 MPH are possible.
