Rain moving through metro Atlanta | How much we'll get and how long it'll stick around

Atlanta picked up more than 3/4" of rain Tuesday, more is on the way

ATLANTA — The most widespread and heavy rain across the area will fall between the hours of Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Wednesday at 5 a.m., but rain will also fall before and after that time frame.

As this first storm system exits, north Georgia will see a break from rain Thursday before another two to four inches of rain arrives Friday into the first half of the weekend.

Timeline

Wednesday 3 a.m.

Widespread and at times heavy rain continues across the area. Roads will be wet. Hydroplaning risk will be high while driving. Standing water on roads is possible. And creeks/streams will be running high as the runoff rushes into the waterways.

Wednesday 6 a.m.

The center of the low tracks over north Georgia takes the most widespread and heavy rainfall east of Atlanta in the early morning hours. That rain east of the city could be heavy at times! But we're not done with rain yet in Atlanta; wraparound moisture pushes more rain back in for the daytime.

Wednesday 11 a.m.

Late morning through early afternoon, more showers continue to work across the area. They'll be scattered in nature and not widespread.

Wednesday 3 p.m.

By mid-afternoon, the last push of showers will move east of Atlanta and into east and northeast Georgia. We'll begin the drying out process in west Georgia.

The last of the rain showers exit the area in the early evening, making way for a dry overnight.

How Much Rain?

Overall, one to two inches of rain falls between Tuesday and Wednesday across the area. There could be isolated rain totals more than that. This soaking rain will elevate creek and stream levels. This will also lead to higher river levels Wednesday into Thursday. The overall flash flood risk is not very high, as the rain falls over a period of a full day and not a one to two hour stretch.

At the end of the week, there's another storm system that will bring an additional two to three inches of rain. This will again create the risk of creek/stream and river flooding.
