Sheriff: Child molestation suspect killed after attacking deputy identified

Investigators said the suspect attacked a deputy with a pipe wrench before being shot dead by other deputies who were also at the scene.

ATLANTA -- A child molestation suspect is dead after authorities say he attacked deputies as they attempted to serve a warrant at the Norfolk Southern railyard in Atlanta.

The bizarre scene played out on Marietta Road in northwest Atlanta as deputies from DeKalb County came to serve a warrant one county over. DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann said that when his deputies arrived, the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Levester Taylor, attacked one of them with a piece of metal. The deputies opened fire in response, killing the suspect.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation later confirmed that the "piece of metal" in question was actually a pipe wrench.

Officials with Norfolk Southern confirmed an incident on their property and that the facility was on lockdown as police investigated. Railyard officials said the suspect was a contractor - not an employee - of the company. The GBI later elaborated that he was an employee of ITS ConGlobal.

The area where the confrontation happened is a part of the yard where workers build trains and truckers bring containers to be unloaded. The deputy who was hit in the head with the pipe wrench is expected to survive.
