Video: Young boy admits to calling 911 just to hug Florida deputy

When the deputy arrived at the home in Riverview, he quickly realized it wasn't an emergency call when the boy's mother explained what might have happened.

RIVERVIEW, Fla. — A deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was able to take a heartwarming situation and also turn it into a learning lesson for a young boy.

Just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, a deputy responded to a call from a young boy who dialed 911 not because of an emergency – he simply wanted to hug a deputy.

When the deputy arrived at the home in Riverview, he quickly realized it wasn't an emergency call when the boy's mother explained what might have happened.

Footage from a security camera and the deputy's body camera shows the moment the boy comes out the door, admitting to calling 911 for a hug (which he got) and proudly explaining he knew how to contact law enforcement.

After the two shared a brief hug, the deputy took the time to explain that 911 is only supposed to be used for emergencies, making sure the boy understood the importance of the line.

"We deeply appreciate the genuine kindness shown by this young child. Our deputies are more than willing to share a hug and spread love to children in our community,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "However, it's essential for everyone to remember that 911 is a lifeline for emergencies.

"We are here to help, and we encourage parents and educators to teach children about the appropriate use of emergency services."
