Parents get into argument escalating to deadly shooting at apartment complex near Atlanta University Center, police say

This is a developing story.

ATLANTA — A man was shot and killed at an apartment complex near the Clark Atlanta University campus on Wednesday evening, police said.

According to police, officers responded right before 6:30 p.m. to 152 Vine Street SW, the location of The Vine at Ashley Scholars Landing apartment complex, in reference to a person shot. When they arrived, they found a 47-year-old man with a gunshot wound dead at the scene.

Lt. Andrew Smith said the man and suspect were parents of children who had gotten into an argument. It escalated to gunfire. The children are OK and with family.

The location of the apartment complex is just a few hundred feet away from the Clark Atlanta University L.S. Epps Gymnasium and not far from the Atlanta University Center.

Neighbor Heather Dye said she's used to crime in the area, which she believes not even the police can solve.

"It happened in the parking lot," Dye described of the scene she saw. "They were outside. They were yelling, going back and forth. And he said, 'Shoot me.' And she did."

Dye said neighbors tried to help.

"We all heard gunshots," Dye said. "And then, one of the neighbors tried to go and check his pulse to see if he was still breathing. And then, he said when he went over there, he was bleeding out of his nose and his mouth like the blood out of his lungs."

Homicide detectives are still working to figure out what led up to the shooting.

Smith said the suspect is being questioned, but no charges have been announced at this time.

Photos from the scene show police tape in the area.
