Gwinnett 'road rage' incident that killed teen was actually robbery attempt, police say

The teen's counterparts are charged in his murder.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A 16-year-old is dead and a 20-year-old is in critical condition after a foiled robbery turned deadly. 

Police say a group of five men attempted to rob an unknown subject in the parking lot of 950 Indian Trail Road at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The person they were attempting to rob shot into the car, which fled the scene. 

The occupants initially told police that they were victims of road rage

The deceased teen has been identified as Junior Lanuza-Gutierrez. Erik Vargas, who was also shot, remains in critical condition.

The three occupants of the car who were not shot have been charged with felony murder and criminal attempt at robbery. All three were arrested and are in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

They are identified as Harry Richardson, 20, Anthoney Esquero, 18, and Kevin Gallardo, 17.

Detectives are still trying to identify the person(s) who fired the shots.
