Man dies after shooting near Atlanta apartments, police say

Authorities responded to the apartments at 585 McDaniel Street SW in Atlanta's Mechanicsville neighborhood-- not far from Rosa L. Burney Park.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are looking for a person of interest after a man was shot and later died near an apartment complex on Tuesday.

Authorities responded to the 500 block of McDaniel Street SW in Atlanta's Mechanicsville neighborhood-- not far from Rosa L. Burney Park.  11Alive crews at the scene saw police tape blocking the middle of the road outside of the apartments. 

When officers arrived shortly before noon, APD said they found the man unconscious, but he was breathing. The man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, Atlanta Police said. In an update, Atlanta Police said the man died due to his injuries. 

Officers on scene are searching for a person in connection to the shooting. APD said its tactical and SWAT units are out as a safety precaution. Investigators were helping to find a person possibly hiding inside a home at the locations. 

As a result of the shooting, Dunbar Elementary School was placed on lockdown for the remainder of the day, according to Atlanta Public Schools. 

Students who live in the impacted apartment complex remained at the school until a parent or guardian could pick them up. 

APD said its investigation remains ongoing.
