ATLANTA — A woman is dead, and a driver is facing charges following a crash on I-20 on April 30 just before 5 p.m.

State troopers said they attempted to stop a Chevrolet Cruze for expired registration and no valid insurance; however, the driver attempted to flee, entering the median of the road and trying to turn around to go in the opposite direction.

As the driver did that, troopers said the car struck a cable barrier and overturned several times, ejecting a female passenger.

When the car came to a stop, troopers said the driver got out and began running, eventually throwing a clear plastic bag that had illegal drugs in it.

Troopers said they arrested the driver and transported the woman to the hospital with "serious bodily injuries." The next morning, on May 1, they said she died from those injuries.

The driver was also taken to the hospital but with minor injuries, according to troopers.

The Morgan County DA is currently pursuing felony charges against the driver.
