CARROLLTON, Ga. — State agents are conducting an independent investigation after they say a man who had been in their custody for three days died suddenly.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Villa Rica Police had arrested 28-year-old Marquis Hayslett on Nov. 15 around 10:30 p.m.  Police had charged Hayslett with simple assault and family violence for an incident involving his girlfriend.

But after being taken to Carroll County Jail, authorities said that Hayslett fell ill.

"At some point during his incarceration, Hayslett reportedly required medical attention for an illness and was placed in the medical holding unit of the jail," the GBI statement said.

Around 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 18, authorities said he was found unresponsive in his cell.

"Emergency medical services were called to attend to Hayslett who was reportedly already deceased," the GBI stated.

The next step in the investigation will involve an autopsy by the GBI medical examiner.  The agency will continue its investigation independently and provide its findings to the district attorney's office for review.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office, which operates the jail, was the department that requested the investigation.
