Damage in Conyers area after tornado | What we know

Severe weather swept across metro Atlanta overnight and hit the Conyers area particularly hard.

CONYERS, Ga. — Severe storms moved across metro Atlanta late Tuesday and into the early morning hours of Wednesday, leaving behind significant damages in some instances. 

Perhaps the hardest-hit area was Conyers, where an EF-2 tornado swept through with max winds of 115 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

11Alive reporters have been in the area since the early hours of Wednesday. We've seen reports of damage stretching from the west of the city along McDaniel Mill Road to the northeastern edges of the city limits around Sigman Road.

EF-2 tornado in Conyers | What we know

  • It came in right around midnight: We first started seeing reports of trees down and damage to homes shortly after midnight.
  • Downed trees and damage were seen in two areas— west of the city around McDaniel Mill Road and to the northeast in the Milstead community and around Sigman Road:  National Weather service officials determined one tornado touched down and traveled nearly 10 miles across the northern parts of the Conyers area.

  • The National Weather Service is surveying damage: In an update Wednesday afternoon, NWS officials confirmed an EF-2 tornado with max winds of 115 mph in Conyers.
  • Many residents are without power: Hundreds were still without power as of Wednesday afternoon. We're continuing to track those outages here.
  • Two people were injured: 11Alive's Liza Lucas had this confirmed with local officials; fortunately, both people were expected to be okay.
  • Road closures: So far, Rockdale EMA reports that only McDaniel Mill Road and Hurst Road have closures in effect.
  • Salvation Army assistance: Meals and assistance kits are available at Fire Station 6 at 2981 Hurst Road.
  • One teen driver, fortunately, escaped injury: 11Alive's Jerry Carnes found a car smashed by a tree, and law enforcement told him a teen driver was found inside the vehicle with the tree sitting on his lap. He was expected to be okay.
