GBI: Burned truck with 2 bodies inside matches vehicle description of missing couple

The bodies will be taken to the medical examiner's office where autopsies will be performed.

An investigation is underway after two people were found dead in a burned truck in Crawfordville on New Year's Day.

Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office said they are looking into the deaths as a possible murder-suicide.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the truck matches the description of the vehicle Greene County authorities were looking for regarding a missing couple. However, the bodies found inside the truck haven't been identified, yet.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office is searching for Steven Rhodes and his wife Melissa Meeks Rhodes.

On Jan. 1,  the sheriff's office posted a photo of the couple saying they were last seen a little after midnight Tuesday heading towards Crawfordville on Bethany Church Road in a 1999 Ford pickup truck.

MORE MISSING IN GEORGIA

Wednesday, the GBI said Taliaferro County Sherif's Office requested their assistance with a death investigation. Two people were found dead in a Ford truck on a logging road off Carters Ford Road in Crawfordville.

"The vehicle was burned and due to the condition of the two occupants, a positive identification could not be made," GBI said in a news release.

The bodies will be taken to the medical examiner's office where autopsies will be performed to determine cause and manner of death.

Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI at 706-595-2575 or the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office at 706-456-2345.
