Police: Cyclist hit by vehicle fleeing police, left for dead

The man was hit while riding his bike at the intersection of Luckie St and Ivan Allen Jr. Drive.

A bicyclist died after being hit by a vehicle in downtown Atlanta, Monday afternoon.

According to Atlanta Police spokesperson Stephanie Brown, officers responded to a call for two vehicles related to possible suspicious activity around 4 p.m. Officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, on one of the vehicles, a Chevrolet HHR, but it sped away from the scene.

Police said supervisors immediately called off a chase, however the Chevrolet later struck a cyclist at the intersection of Luckie Street and Ivan Allen Jr. Drive. Police said the driver did not stop.

Fulton County Medical Examiner's Officer identified the cyclist as Andrew Whitlock, 37.

Emergency responders tried to perform CPR on Whitlock, but he died on the way to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Police later recovered the Chevrolet HHR at an undisclosed location in northwest Atlanta, but the driver was nowhere to be found and is still on the loose. Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers or Atlanta Police.
