Residents take City of Doraville to court over probation for code violations

DORAVILLE, Ga. -- Several residents have decided to take the City of Doraville to court after they were given fines and probational jail sentences for violating the city's strict codes.

One resident in particular, Hilda Brucker, believes she was the victim of Doraville's "revenue-reliant municipal justice system".

The lawsuit states that the city is using law enforcement and municipal court systems to generate revenue rather than protect the rights of residents.

“In American courtrooms, the judge and prosecutor you face should be neutral public servants,” said IJ attorney Josh House, who represents the Plaintiffs in the case. “But in Doraville, the city’s municipal court and law enforcement are tasked with finding residents and passers-through guilty of crimes in order to generate revenue. That violates fundamental principles of due process.”
