Two die in crash caused by tree falling into road in Cobb County

The deadly crash happened Wednesday on South Cobb Drive near Lake Circle.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Two people are dead after a tree fell in the roadway causing a crash in Cobb County on Wednesday, according to police on Thursday. 

It happened on South Cobb Drive near Lake Circle, Cobb County Police said in a release.

According to the department, a 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van was traveling west on South Cobb Drive in the right lane when the tree fell onto the right shoulder into the path of the van. 

Cobb Police said the van struck the tree and that both the driver, identified as 61-year-old Niclay Boytchev of Smyrna, and the passenger, identified as 46-year-old Alberto Alvarado Nicacio of Marietta, "sustained fatal injuries in the collision and were pronounced deceased by personnel from the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office."
