Suspicious package reported in downtown Atlanta

Authorities briefly evacuated an area in downtown Atlanta Friday morning after a suspicious package was reported.

ATLANTA — Authorities responded to a suspicious package call from 2 Peachtree Street, SW, Friday morning.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Georgia State Capitol Police were on the scene along with the Georgia State Patrol and the Atlanta Police Department.

According to a report from the Georgia State Patrol, an employee of the Two Peachtree Street office building reported a "beeping sound" coming from a trash bin outside the office tower.

As a result, personnel were evacuated from the building while law enforcement agents investigated the situation more closely.

During the search, an employee from the office building told law enforcement she was aware of the source of the beeping.

She said that she had made an online purchase of shoes and that when the shoes arrived, a security tag was attached.

According to the report, when she cut the tag, it began to make a "beeping sound."

She told officers that she threw the tag into the trash before she went into the building to go to work.

A bomb squad robot was deployed and determined that the source of the beeping was from the security device that had been described.

Officials said the area that had been evacuated has since been cleared and people have been allowed to return to the area.
