Police: Teen who allegedly shot, killed sleeping 3-year-old arrested at school

Three-year-old T'Rhigi Craig was shot and killed as he slept in the back seat of his mother's car on Easter Sunday, police said.

It's been roughly a day since a 15-year-old boy was arrested in the shooting death of a toddler. Now we're learning a little more about the teen now charged in the death.

Three-year-old T'Rhigi Craig was shot and killed as he slept in the back seat of his mother's car on Easter Sunday, police said.

"First of all, this is tragic all the way around, being that the 3-year-old did lose his life," DeKalb Police Lt. Lonzy Robertson said. "And now we have to possibly convict a 15-year-old who still has his life in front of him, also."

Robertson added that the teen was in class when police arranged to have him arrested. There, he was taken into custody without any resistance.

"He was in school in Atlanta," Robertson said. "We can't go into what school it was, but we were able to take him into custody there and then bring him back to our headquarters."

Robertson now confirms that tips ultimately aided police in finding the as-of-yet unidentified teen.

According to police, witnesses they spoke with were some of the same ones seen on surveillance video at the nearby Texaco gas station when the shooting happened. It was from that same gas station - or very close to it - that police believe the teen opened fire.

Robertson said witnesses were able to "paint a picture" for investigators of the scene that now. But Robertson said they believe one other person at the station may have actually had a better view.

"We do believe he was actually outside when the shooting occurred so we do want to know what he actually saw," he said. "Because it may help us also locate that Dodge Charger that may be involved also."

Police were originally investigating the shooting as a drive-by shooting that they thought involved the passengers of that car but later confirmed through investigation that the bullets came from elsewhere.

However, with the mother insisting that someone in the car was brandishing a paintball gun, police still want to speak with them. Both are also considered witnesses.

"I saw the paint gun. I kind of got scared," she told 11Alive previously. "I couldn't move and then they just shot my baby."

For now, there are still many unanswered questions in the shooting including who the teen was aiming at when he opened fire and whether he will face charges as a juvenile or an adult. But Robertson said investigators are working hard to answer them.

"We hope that this will bring some closure to the family of T'Rhigi," he said.
